The city of Marseille was selected from a list of eight other candidates to be a European Capital of Culture in 2013, along with Kosice, in Slovakia.
During this showcase year, Marseille and the entire region of Provence will set the stage for numerous cultural and artistic events. Every realm of culture will be represented: literature, dance, music, sculpture, painting and photography, circus arts and street performances.
Special programs will be organized around the theme of the four seasons, and marked by the inauguration of new facilities devoted to art and culture. Marseille and the region thus plan to create and renovate 16 sites that are emblematic of Provence, including the J1, the Mucem, the Centre Régional de la Méditerranée and the Silo, which will be the landmarks of a new, modernized urban landscape devoted to social venues and to culture.
As a venue for hosting visitors to the Marseille-Provence 2013 cultural festivities, the very beautiful and contemporary Villa Massalia Hotel has a large number of rooms and enjoys a magnificent view of the Mediterranean Sea. After a day spent taking part in cultural exhibits and events, visitors will appreciate the natural greenery of the Parc Borély and the numerous luxury services offered by the hotel.
