Galeries Lafayette

One of the best know French department stores, Galeries Lafayette is at the centre of the Opera shopping district, close to Saint Lazare station. Seven floors of French and international fashion, accessories, beauty and home design are enough to keep any shopper busy for an entire day.

Founded in 1893, the Galeries Lafayette started life as a novelty store on the corner of Lafayette and Chaussée d’Antin. The store’s location next to the newly opened Saint Lazare station bought a stream of new customers and the store prospered. The store was expanded by purchasing neighbouring buildings and in 1906, Théophile Bader commissioned the Roman award-winning architect Georges Chedanne to design the new layout of the Haussmann store.
